π© Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus names four women β on purpose
Ancient genealogies almost never listed women. Matthew’s does anyway, and the four he
chooses β Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and “the wife of Uriah” (Bathsheba) β are each connected to a
scandal or a non-Israelite background, which scholars read as a deliberate signal about who
belongs in the story.
